More Moos from a New Herd of Concrete Cows

A Bletchley Scout group is celebrating 100 years of Scouting by making 100 model concrete cows which will be then sold to raise funds. This bovine challenge is just one of ten special activities set by the group in this year of celebrations.

The Saints Scouts have already achieved a 100km hike, 100 raft crossings of a lake and 100 nights camping. The concrete cow challenge seemed an obvious way of commemorating the Scout movement while also celebrating the 40th birthday of the city of Milton Keynes itself.

The mini concrete cows are approximately 25cm long, weigh about 3.5Kg and will soon be seen in gardens across Milton Keynes and beyond. Their original cousins are life size and permenantly displayed in a grassy field in Bancroft in Milton Keynes.

One of the Scout leaders took on the challenge at the beginning of the year and started by making a clay model. From that a mould was produced and concrete has been mixed morning and night in order to cast all 100 mini concrete cow models. Each one has been painted by members of the group and a mini Scout necker scarf completes the decoration.

Brewers, the local paint specialist has donated the masonary paint, the MK DONS football team will have 10 cows on sale at their home game against Bradford on Saturday 6th October, and Horizon Radio is running a competition to win a mini concrete cow during the week comencing Monday 1 October. A local company has volunteered to provide a website to display the cows. The limited Scout edition mini concrete cows go on general sale on 1 October at www.mkcows.com at prices starting from £10 each. All the profits will go to The Saints Scout Group in Bletchley, Mitlon Keynes.

Saints Scout Group Assistant Leader, Mark Cain said "Everyone who has seen one of these little cows has instantly fallen in love with them. They always ask how can they get one? They will have to be quick though as there will only ever be 100 of these special edition Scout mini concrete cows."
